Rick Brimacomb, founding partner of Sherpa Partners, a venture capital firm focused on early-stage companies in the Upper Midwest, will speak at the James J. Hill Reference Library (http://www.jjhill.org/Events) March 8, 2006 on the topic, “The Secret to Securing Venture Capital.”
The James J. Hill Library hosts hundreds of events, educational programs and business learning seminars each year. According to Jim Poole, Membership Development Manager, “The Library is dedicated to helping business professionals and entrepreneurs obtain the information they need to be successful. We are excited to be able to host a speaker like Rick Brimacomb who can offer expertise on a topic that is of high interest to the local community.”
Because Minnesota is relatively underserved by the national venture capital community, securing venture capital is a significant concern for many local businesses. According to Brimacomb, “Early-stage financing is vital to maintaining the entrepreneurial spirit and encouraging the development of new industries. It is Sherpa Partners’ mission to help emerging area companies realize their vision and fulfill the growing need for early-stage institutional investment capital.”
Sherpa has developed a national reputation as being “hands-on” investors and also serves as a resource for business strategy and support services for early-stage companies. The firm is dedicated to providing the tactical and strategic assistance necessary to help its portfolio companies become market leaders in their respective industries.
To further spur investment in young companies, Brimacomb recently helped form the Early Stage Investors Network. The group provides a forum for venture capitalists and angel investors to share business investment opportunities and ideas as well as discuss funding sources and development strategies.
Prior to Sherpa Partners, Brimacomb most recently served as Senior Director at Smaby Group, Inc. He was also a co-founder and Vice President of Finance for Cartia, Inc., a venture capital-backed software startup. Brimacomb’s additional experience includes venture capital, investment banking and investment research at Norwest Venture Capital, Piper Jaffray and Neeham & Co., respectively.
