Dr. Nissan Kahen started providing health and medical care to his patients through South Atlantic Medical Group (SAMG) in the heart of East Los Angeles in 1984. Paul Parviz Kahen, Dr. Kahen’s brother, assumed Administrator duties for SAMG shortly thereafter. In 1990, they began to expand SAMG facilities and by 1991 SAMG comprised a total of five medical centers throughout Los Angeles County. Their goal was to open medical centers in areas that include underserved patients who needed a welcoming physician with supportive staff that understand fully the health and medical needs of patients.
After starting his private practice, Dr. Nissan Kahen saw the need for a community oriented medical practice that served the special needs of his patients and that provided a solid, challenging practice environment for fellow physicians. Paul Parviz Kahen had concerns about the administrative “red tape” and unnecessary delays that inhibited patients in receiving timely medical care and services, particularly as a result of the fee-for-service programs and reimbursement systems. They believed that health insurers and payors should provide their beneficiaries with better, appropriate and efficient health insurance options, including preventive care, prescription drug coverage and transportation assistance.
In 2004, Dr. Kahen and Paul Parviz Kahen began planning and development of a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) to promote innovation and delivery system improvements to provide quality and appropriate health and medical care in a financially challenging environment. Paul Parviz Kahen now devotes his full administrative and management time to the HMO.
