Press Release:

On June 3 and 4, the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition (BWAC) will host its Open Studio Weekend in Red Hook and the surrounding neighborhoods of Carroll Gardens and Boerum Hill. Self-guided tours are an extension of the ongoing BWAC Pier Art Show which attracts thousands each year and allow art lovers to delve more deeply into the area’s vibrant art scene.

In this annual event, over 75 artists will open their studios to the public offering a unique and exciting opportunity to meet the artists and learn about the origins of some of Brooklyn’s freshest art. Studios throughout the neighborhood will be open from noon to 6 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.

“During the Open Studio Weekend, visitors see artists in their own spaces—they see the work where it’s created—in a more intimate setting than a museum or gallery, “ says Ellie Winberg, a full-time working artist and BWAC coordinator, “In fact, many gallery owners and serious collectors use these tours as an opportunity to scout out emerging talent.”

But whether one is a serious collector or not, the BWAC Open Studio Weekend will offer all visitors a chance to find excellent work while helping to support and advance the careers of local Brooklyn artists in a very direct and satisfying way. Tour-goers will find art ranging from traditional oil paintings and watercolors to handmade paper, photography, ceramic sculpture, mixed media, glass art, installations and experimental works. In addition to a host of individual studios, several large multi-artists’ studios will be opening their doors for this once a year event, including the Coffey Park Artists Collective in Red Hook, nationally-known New Clay Studio on Degraw Street and Jerard Studio also in Red Hook, whose artistic design credits include Broadway plays, movie sets and museum interactive displays.

Making the experience especially exciting and potentially much more fruitful for tour-goers, the Red Hook/Carroll Gardens Open Studio Weekend and the Atlantic Avenue Art Walk (www.atlanticavenueartwalk.com) have been coordinated to take place simultaneously.

Maps for all artists’ locations can be obtained at the BWAC Pier Show, located at 499 Van Brunt in Red Hook; Winberg Studio at 160 Union Street in Carroll Gardens; the Fall Café at 307 Smith Street near the Carroll Garden F subway stop; as well from any participating BWAC Open Studio artist; or by calling 718-832-0496. In addition, maps can be downloaded from the web at www.bwac.org.

The Brooklyn Waterfront Artist Coalition is the largest artist-run, nonprofit volunteer arts organization in Brooklyn.
