Bottled Water – Help or Hype?
While some consumers have switched to bottled water, studies conducted by government, university and independent watchdog organizations have shown it’s not a reliable alternative. Surprisingly, the source is often a municipal water supply. “ In essence, you are paying hundreds or thousands of times more for something that may be from the same source as your tap water, and could be better, or could be worse,” said Scardigno. “The one thing it really has going for it is that it’s convenient. That’s a lot of money to pay for convenience.”
Consumer Reports seems to agree. In the March issue, it states: “Unlike bottled water, many filters tell you exactly what they filter out. Filters also give you clean water that's cheaper than bottled water delivered to your home…”
Breaking Through the Propaganda and Half-Truths
Scardigno warns that buyers had better do their homework, because the explosive demand for home water filtration has sparked some unethical companies and bogus or exaggerated claims.
How do you know which filtration systems are the best available? “Having the certification of a credible independent laboratory is one good way of assuring quality,” said Scardigno. “One good source is the NSF, which insists on extensive laboratory testing for each contaminant removal claim before it will grant its Certificate of Claims.” Check out water filters and water filter systems with NSF certifications.
“Choosing the right treatment device is an important decision so it is equally important to know what you’re looking for,” says Scardigno. “Some may want the protection of a whole house system while others just need to filter out unpleasant tastes and odors from their drinking water.”
There are several ways to research what water filtration system may be right for you. Consult with a water treatment professional, get your water tested, or conduct online research at sites such as NSF or WQA.
