As hurricane season begins, Dr. Thomas Gorgas of Amakua Video and Waterproof Kids donates half of his percentage of the proceeds from the Baby Steps DVD to Oprah's Angel Network dedicated to the rebuilding of Oprah's Katrina Homes.

When asked what motivated the donation, he shares, “Last year, I was working in the gulf when Hurricane Katrina hit followed by Hurricane Rita. I witnessed the devastation along the gulf first-hand. At the time, I began pouring money into the Red Cross for their relief efforts. Then earlier this year, I witnessed a Katrina survivor being evicted from a hotel. She was waiting for a relief fund check to pay her hotel bill, and it had not arrived in time, so she was facing eviction. I made sure her bill was covered for the week ahead until she could make alternative arrangements. Katrina and Rita victims are still in crisis, and they need our ongoing help.”
Resilience is the theme for Katrina and other hurricane survivors. Dr. Gorgas recently interviewed Dr. Edith Eva Eger, a Clinical Psychologist and Auschwitz Survivor. She had just returned from giving a commencement speech at the Mississippi School for Math and Science. She shared words of wisdom about human resilience, specifically how to move from surviving to thriving and moving from victimization to empowerment.
The interview inspired Dr. Gorgas to donate half of his percentage of the proceeds from Amakua Video’s latest co-production with Waterproof Kids, a DVD called Baby Steps www.Strategic-Living.com/products.html that focuses on water safety skills for infants to two years of age starting in the bathtub and progressing to the pool. The organization that he chose for his donation is Oprah’s Angel Network Katrina Homes Fund, because 100% of the proceeds donated go directly to rebuilding the lives of Katrina victims.
Dr. Gorgas notes, “On some level, at some point in time, we all endure the process of rebuilding our lives after a personal tragedy by taking baby steps. It is my hope that the newly released Baby Steps DVD will help to promote water safety and swimming education for parents and their children, while simultaneously helping Katrina victims to rebuild their homes and their personal lives by taking baby steps.”
