If you measure flash memory by gigabytes, worldwide flash grew about 150% this year.
For example, Apple's iPod nano stores music on flash memory rather than one-inch hard drives. That’s why the nano is so much smaller than its predecessor, the iPod mini. Apple consumes about 40% of Samsung's total flash production. And Samsung buys flash memory chips from Smith’s pick, Silicon Motion (SIMO).
SIMO has successfully implemented the world’s fastest USB 2.0 flash disk controller. They are boosting sales to makers of MP3 players, and then moving on to other consumer devices such as the new satellite radio portables.
SOLAR POWER – Smith endorses the ONE company in the world that owns the intellectual property rights for hybrid car batteries: Energy Conversion Devices (ENER).
ENER also owns the leader in photovoltaic roofing (roofs that generate electricity). Using their proprietary thin-film a-Si alloy materials, they have the most cost-effective solar cell on the market.
According to the DOE's National Renewable Energy Laboratory, ENER holds world records for both large- and small-area conversion efficiency. This exploding technology is big in Europe, North America, and China.
CANADIAN OIL SANDS -- Smith’s current longer-term oil sands play is UTS Energy (T.UTS). Last year, Canada delivered more oil from "oil sands" than from conventional wells, and production is expected to more than double within five years.
The wealth appreciation in these fields is just beginning. According to CIBC World Markets Analyst Jeff Rubin, Alberta’s oil sands will become the most important source of new oil in the world by 2010 as conventional crude dries up.
U.S. Geological Survey reports indicate that Canada will soon rival Saudi Arabia in recoverable oil production. UTS has a 40% stake in the Fort Hills tar sands field, which offers incredibly cheap oil. Combine all the costs of mining, extracting, converting and refining into synthetic crude, and UTS has potential production of 190,000 barrels a day for the next 40 years at a cost of less than $10 a barrel.
Smith declared, "With UTS Energy's market cap under $2.5 billion, I have not found a more compelling long-term energy play." Subscribers who took his advice back in May 2005 have scored 110% gains.
