December 1, 2006, marks the 20th anniversary of Tailwinds Catalog. Since 1986 Tailwinds has supplied over 500,000 aviation gifts to pilots and airplane enthusiasts. The award winning aviation catalog was founded on a kitchen table by air race pilots Marion Jayne and Nancy Palozola in their Illinois home in 1986. Nancy fondly recalls "Our kitchen table was the mail room and accounting office, orders were taken on the phone by the stairs that lead down to our basement where we handled picking and packaging and the garage was where all merchandise was received and shipped." Tailwinds started with a circulation of only 5,000 catalogs and grew to a 1,000,000 plus circulation. The paper Christmas gift catalog, offered a wide selection of pilot gifts including authentic scale model airplanes, aviation jewelry, pilot watches, aviation art and even airplane gifts for kids.
The founders were not just armchair pilots; Marion Jayne and Nancy Palozola competed and won numerous cross country air races in North America. Always up for a new adventure, Marion and Nancy competed in Arc-n-Ciel’s ‘First Round the World Air Race’ in 1992. Flying the ‘Tailwinds World Flyer,’ a piston engine Piper Twin Comanche, they placed second overall competing against aircraft that were turbo enhanced. Marion went on to win the second ‘Around the World Air Race’ in 1994. Marion was also inducted to the Aviation Hall of Fame on her deathbed in 1996 and was honored as one of the 100 greatest pilots of the century by the President of the United States, during the centennial celebration of the Wright Brothers flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Nancy has since assumed the job of Chief Executive Officer of Tailwinds, Inc.
In 1990 Tailwinds acquired The Flight Computing Catalog which is now a department within aviation software, flight training aids, or flight simulation technology to use. Says Nancy, "Providing top quality products and excellent service to our customers has always been our top priority, and this is evidenced by our nearly perfect ‘Top Service’ rating at our highly rated Yahoo Store."
"Tailwinds Catalog is now Tailwinds.com, with headquarters located in Northern California; it has migrated completely online with a store front and dynamic aviation gift search engine. We have always loved flying and loved technology so building an aviation store on the internet was just a natural fit," states Nancy Palozola. Prior to founding Tailwinds, Nancy had a career spanning 10 years in the computer industry as a sales executive at Wang Laboratories, a then, Fortune 500 computer firm.
