London (Online-unsecured-loans) May 23, 2008: On Thursday the BA got a respite when the agitating pilots ended their court action against the employer. As soon as the news of the British Air Line Pilots Association (BALPA) withdrawing its case against the employer spread around, the companys shares closed at 212.5 pounds, witnessing a 4.7% growth.
Heaving a sigh of relief for averting the prospects of a strike, BA issued a statement: "We welcome the withdrawal of proceedings by BALPA, which represents acknowledgment by the union that the creation of our subsidiary, OpenSkies, poses no threat to the jobs, pay or conditions of mainline British Airways pilots. "The union accepted in court that its ballot in support of industrial action was time-expired and gave an undertaking not to pursue any future ballot on the same issue," the BA added later.
However the issue should not be considered closed altogether, as the BALPA (having about 3000 BA member pilots) took a cautionary and reserved stance even after the reconciliatory gesture. "We have withdrawn the court action," BALPA spokesman, Keith Bill reported to confirm that it was not going for a strike. "But we may pursue other action against BA. Thats to be decided," Bill added without going further in to the details.
The union had approached the court because the pilots were dissatisfied over the fact that the pilots at BAs latest OpenSkies airlines will serve under different provisions unlike the current BA staff. If the pilots had gone on a strike, it would have really added to the problems of BA already under the heat of criticism over the issues of lost baggage and flight cancellations from the latest Heathrow terminal.
