Press Release:

Christenbury Eye Center announced today that Dr. Jonathan D. Christenbury is the most experienced ReSTOR surgeon in the country, implanting more of the new intraocular lenses each month than any other ophthalmologist in the United States.

Dr. Christenbury is excited about this accomplishment as a reflection of his dedication to his patients. “I try my best to offer the latest technology and procedures to my patients, and this announcement is a representation of that,” Christenbury said. ”Most of our ReSTOR patients are able to read the newspaper the day after their procedure and the fine print of a prescription drug insert within the week. These results are truly amazing.”

The ReSTOR procedure is a breakthrough in intraocular (IOL) technology that allows individuals with age-related Presbyopia, or the need for reading glasses or bifocals, to enjoy clear all-distance vision.

The ReSTOR procedure works by focusing the amount the light coming through the pupil onto the retina using concentric rings of varying focal capabilities. This technology mimics the eye’s natural lens by allowing an individual to focus on objects at all distances. By relying on light to focus, the ReSTOR IOL has no moving parts and is not dependent on the muscles of the eye to work properly.

Dr. Christenbury says the success of the ReSTOR procedure can be chiefly attributed to its use as a remedy for age-related Presbyopia, commonly known as “over 40 vision.” Age-related Presbyopia is a natural element of aging and involves the lens of the eye and the muscles that control it becoming rigid and losing flexibility. This results in a loss of near vision, and individuals begin to require reading glasses or bifocals to clearly see near objects that must often be held at arm’s length to be read unaided.

“Because the ReSTOR procedure is so successful and recovery time is very short, many people see ReSTOR as a viable way to get out of their readers or bifocals for good,” Christenbury said.

Dr. Christenbury performed his first ReSTOR procedure May 9, 2005. It was one of the first procedures performed in the United States following FDA approval. During U.S. clinical trials, the results with ReSTOR were remarkable:
• 99% of patients could see well enough to drive a car without glasses or contacts
• 97% of patients could read the newspaper without reading glasses or bifocals
• 90% of patients could shave or put on makeup without glasses or contacts
• 74% of patients could read stock quotes in the Wall Street Journal without reading glasses or bifocals

Dr. Jonathan Christenbury established Christenbury Eye Center in 1987 and is known for his groundbreaking work in vision care. He performed the first LASIK procedure in the Carolinas in the early 1990s. Since that time he has performed more than 50,000 laser vision correction procedures, making him one of the world’s most experienced IntraLASIK surgeons.
