The devastation in the Gulf Coast Region may not be on the news each night anymore, but the needs remain.
One Chicagoland business is helping solve part of that need.
"The Room Place at Harlem Furniture is pleased to be able to help our friends in Mississippi," explains Mr. Bruce Berman, Chief Executive Officer of Harlem Furniture. "Two shelters serving victims of domestic violence and abused children were destroyed during Hurricane Katrina. A third shelter was severely damaged. All three shelters need new furniture to be able to provide their critical services."
Two semi-trailers packed with over $75,000.00 worth of furniture will be leaving the Room Place at Harlem Furniture's distribution center in Woodridge, Illinois on November 17th to travel to Gulfport, Mississippi. Along with the furniture, there are brand new sheets, pillows, towels, socks, underwear, and other sorely needed items donated by the Harlem Furniture employees. The furniture is being donated to America Responds With Love, Inc. This non-profit organization is coordinating efforts to provide needed products to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. From Gulfport, the furniture will be transported to the three shelters.
"We know a lot of people in Chicagoland have family and friends in Mississippi and the Gulf Coast," states Mr. Richard A. McDonough, President and Chief Executive Officer of America Responds With Love. "The donated furniture from The Room Place at Harlem Furniture will help re-open two shelters and help re-furnish a third shelter that provide housing to those most in need in Mississippi. We greatly appreciate their help."
