In the face of September 11, he expanded. Not willing to rest on his laurels once he reached full recovery almost 4 years on, he decided to expand again. Where to this time? Yet, another Wall Street location? According to well-known Manhattan caterer, Rob Garber, in the circumstances, three times was lucky. No more outlets this time, he’s upping the ante on the Internet.
Baguettes and Company, a popular corporate catering operation head-quartered in Park Place, Lower Manhattan, has re-launched its website at www.bagandco.com. So if the domain is not new, what has changed? Well, basically everything.
“Recovering from September 11 absorbed my attention so much that, once we had, I was left trying to remember what we had been planning to do before that occurred,” said Garber. “The state of my various websites was a quick reminder to say the least.”
A long term proponent of the benefit of the Internet to business, Garber had established websites for both his operations: BitsnBites restaurants and Baguettes and Co, the corporate catering arm, years ago. In fact they had been through a couple of revamps but remained online menus rather than tools for business expansion.
According to Garber, it was now time to play catch up and go eCommerce and he chose BagandCo.com as the first off cab off the rank.
“I knew what I wanted to do but I did not have the time to get too involved. I looked around for someone who could take my one-liner specification and ‘just do it’.” Garber explained. “After a false start, I quickly realized a website developer was not quite what I wanted. I needed someone who understood business, preferably mine, and could just get the job done without me having to spoon feed them. So I asked around and found ozEworks.”
A New York startup, ozEworks, Inc is headed by Australian born Kym Romanets. Romanets not only understood business, she understood Rob’s business having been married to a chef for ten years.
“That was a long time ago, now” said Romanets. “He is a great chef. I never learnt how to cook though. I was kind of hoping Rob would spoon feed me but he insisted on money. He at least put in a take-out bag”.
ozEworks constructed an online ordering solution that presented the BagandCo Corporate Catering menu in a manner that makes it easy for corporate catering clients to place orders.
“We went for a slightly different look hinging the design on a shape of a circle/plate using the BagandCo menu colors and logo. The site content follows the catering menu layout. In fact you can print off the menu if you want and come back when you have made your choices. Ordering is easy but more importantly from Rob’s perspective, administration is easy. Everything is database driven. A change of menu is no problem. In fact Rob decided to offer Gift Baskets this Holiday season. It was simply a matter of adding them into the database via an Admin panel and he can do that for himself”.
Rob will be the first to admin he can’t – at least not yet. “I did not realize that going from web presence to ecommerce was such a leap forward. It was not until Kym sat in my office and told me straight out that I needed to realize that I had in fact opened another outlet that I understood how far I’d leapt. Luckily ozEworks came to the rescue and was able to set it up 100% for me. In fact they went the whole nine yards and did the photos for the new gift baskets too.”
So, where to now? Well no laurel resting this time round either. While Rob intends to revamp BitsnBites, he already has plans to keep improving the service he offers to his corporate clients on BagandCo. “We plan to keep adding to the site, providing in written form the kind of advice we have been providing over the phone for years. How to cater a fool-proof corporate event, choose the right food and beverages and how to cover all those things you never think about until the last minute – like the cake! Don’t forget to let them eat cake!”
